The Wykagyl Crossways Neighborhood Association, in partnership with local historian Barbara Davis from the New Rochelle Public Library, held a virtual event on Wednesday September 2nd on the 300+ year history of New Rochelle with a focus on our neighborhood.
The event started off with an overall historical recount of the first settlers in New Rochelle by the sound, how land was distributed back in those days, and lastly how the City expanded to the north. It was at this point that Ms. Davis provided a deep and meticulous explanation of how Wykagyl was born.
This presentation had a rich collection of pictures, drawings, and postcard illustrations that made the event lively and engaging. These illustrations showed the development of New Rochelle, some historical sites that we can still enjoy today, and the change of our neighborhood through the years. Some notable residents were also highlighted as part of the presentation.
The photographs, art illustrations and postcards can be found at the New Rochelle Public Library’s website at nrpl.org and navigate to “New Rochelle History”. You may use the following direct links:

We thank all who attended the event, in specific Barbara Davis for her time, our Council Woman Liz Fried, and all our members. A recording of the event will be made available in the next few days at the New Rochelle Public Library’s website.
